Case Study interviews - how to be successful by Escient

Escient

A case study interview can feel daunting—but it doesn't have to be.

At Escient, we use case studies in our graduate selection process because they're a great way to understand your thinking process, your analytical abilities, and how you communicate your ideas. Importantly, we're not looking for a "right" answer—we're interested in your thought process. Here's our advice to help you confidently demonstrate how you approach and tackle a challenge.

Clearly understand the problem

Before jumping into solutions, ensure you fully grasp the case. Spend time carefully reading and considering the following:

  • What is the core challenge?
  • Who are the stakeholders, and what are their perspectives?
  • Are there any constraints or key details to be mindful of?

This foundational understanding sets you up to think critically and logically about the scenario.

Structure your approach

Demonstrating a structured thought process is essential. A helpful way to organise your thinking might include:

  1. Summarising the challenge: Briefly articulate your understanding of the case.
  2. Exploring factors: Clearly identify important considerations or relevant data points.
  3. Identifying options: Lay out several possible approaches.
  4. Providing recommendations: Choose an approach that feels most suitable and explain your reasoning.

Your structure shows clarity and helps your audience follow your thinking effortlessly.

Think broadly and practically

A strong response demonstrates both broad awareness and practicality. Consider multiple angles—such as business outcomes, people impacts, and operational feasibility. Ask yourself:

  • Can this realistically be implemented?
  • What are the potential risks or barriers?
  • How will this solution impact different stakeholders?

This balance shows depth in your thinking and that you're grounded in reality.

Clearly communicate your thinking

We want to hear how you arrived at your conclusions. Clear, confident communication is essential:

  • Share your thought process openly.
  • Speak clearly, avoid jargon, and explain your reasoning in simple terms.
  • Be prepared to discuss your thinking and comfortably address any questions.
  • Remember, we're interested in your genuine thinking—not perfection or rehearsed answers.

Practise sharing your thinking

The best way to become comfortable with case studies is practice. Test your mock case scenarios with peers or mentors, focusing on clearly articulating your thought process. Get feedback and use it to refine your approach. Practicing helps build comfort and confidence, ensuring your true abilities shine during the case study.

A case study is a valuable opportunity to showcase your critical thinking, structured approach, and communication skills. Take your time to understand the problem, carefully structure your thoughts, think holistically, and communicate your approach clearly. Remember, we're most interested in your thought process, adaptability, and problem-solving ability, rather than any specific "correct" answer. Embrace the chance to demonstrate your strengths and unique perspective—we're excited to see your ideas and approach.
