Graduate Consultant at Argon & Co

Bachelor of Commerce at Monash University

Consulting allows me to work with large companies across different sectors, gaining valuable insights into how they operate, the challenges they face, and best practices.

What's your job about?

Argon & Co is a management consulting firm specialising in operations and supply chain transformation. We mainly work across different service lines such as manufacturing, logistics, supply chain planning and procurement.  One of the key projects I worked on  involved building capital business cases for a client investing in new manufacturing equipment. My role was to assess both the financial and operational impacts of the investment, ensuring the proposed machinery would deliver measurable benefits. This involved time in motion studies, estimated capacity increases and long term savings. I also worked on designing how the machines would interact within the production line, ensuring equipment maximises efficiency while improving safety and ergonomics for employees and making their jobs easier.

By mapping out the operational improvements, we were able to highlight how the new equipment would enhance throughput and improve product consistency. Our business case provided the client with a clear financial justification for the investment, giving them the confidence to move forward with implementation.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Melbourne and completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Monash University. I found Argon & Co through a university career expo and then applied to the graduate program. I have now been working at Argon & Co for just over a year. My interest in supply chain management was piqued in university when someone first explained logistics to me and some of the complexities that arise from shipping across the world.

Argon & Co ‘s graduate program appealed to me because it gives you the chance to rotate through different service lines and find out what you enjoy before specialising. Additionally, the opportunity to get an overseas secondment in such a junior position was extremely unique.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, without a doubt. People at Argon have all kinds of different backgrounds, from science and commerce to philosophy. A common characteristic among everyone I’ve worked with is a strong desire to continuously learn and grow from each new project. Consulting is more about problem-solving, analytical thinking, and adaptability rather than any specific degree. Attention to detail, organisational skills, and time management are also crucial for success. If you enjoy tackling complex problems, collaborating with teams, and learning in a fast-paced environment, consulting could be a great fit—regardless of your academic background.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the things I love most about my job is the rapid pace of learning and exposure to a variety of companies and industries. Consulting allows me to work with large companies across different sectors, gaining valuable insights into how they operate, the challenges they face, and best practices. I particularly enjoy working on complex problems collaboratively with clients and other colleagues. Then seeing those solutions go live and make a significant positive change for the client shows that the work we do makes a meaningful difference.

What are the limitations of your job?

Consulting can be demanding, especially when you are responsible for multiple deliverables with tight deadlines. There are times when long hours are required to get the work done on time. Additionally, travel is often a part of the job—whether it’s visiting client sites, flying interstate, or working in regional locations for extended periods. The nature of consulting also requires adaptability. Each project has its own set of challenges, industries, and working environments. This variety keeps the job exciting, however it also means stepping into the unknown frequently. Thus, requiring a willingness to learn and adjust quickly.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Go travel the world while you are at university. Once you start working you realise you have a lot less time to be able to travel.
  2. Join university clubs to get a better idea of what different career paths entail. This can give you an idea of what might interest you after university.
  3. Don’t worry about your Atar too much. There is always another path to get into the course you want to do.
