Graduate Hydraulics and Fire Services Engineer at Arup Australia
Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) at University of Canterbury
What do you do in your role?
I’m part of the Fire & Hydraulics team within Arup’s wider Building Services team, specialising in fire protection, detection and water management for buildings. On the fire side, my focus is keeping people safe – designing fire detection and protection sprinkler systems, ensuring coverage across the whole building. On the water side, I design plumbing systems, from water supply and drainage to stormwater management, making sure everything functions smoothly and meets regulations.
What does a typical ‘day in the life’ look like?
No two days are the same, and that’s what keeps things exciting! I’m always diving into new projects and initiatives, but some of my regular tasks include estimating building water demand, designing drainage systems, comparing system options and ensuring fire safety compliance for buildings.
For drainage, I factor in roof areas, building locations, and rainfall data to size pipework correctly. When it comes to hot water supply, I weigh up different systems – like individual hot water units versus centralised setups – based on the building’s needs and client preferences. Sizing water demand involves assessing occupancy, usage, and fixtures to ensure reliable supply. On the fire safety side, I determine fire hydrant placement and select the right detection and protection systems for various building types.
Beyond the technical work, I love getting involved in office life. As co-chair of the monthly drinks committee I help organise monthly social events for the office. In addition, I organise lunch-and-learns for my team helping us to gain inspiration by seeing what others are working on.
Why did you choose engineering?
My love for physics and calculus in high school first sparked my interest in engineering. But what really solidified my decision was seeing Christchurch rebuild after the earthquake. The large-scale civil infrastructure projects shaping the city’s recovery inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a real impact.
Why did you choose a career with Arup?
Arup’s people-focused culture and commitment to sustainability aligned perfectly with what I wanted in a graduate role. I was drawn to the firm’s global projects, technical excellence, and the creativity behind its engineering solutions. For me, the details and stories behind great design are what make this career exciting, and Arup is the perfect place to be part of that.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The people. The collaborative and supportive culture makes all the difference – everyone is approachable and willing to share their knowledge. I also love the social side of work, from team events to making friends with colleagues. There are so many opportunities to connect with different teams, which has given me a broader understanding of the business and the diverse disciplines within it. It’s a great environment to learn, grow, and build lasting relationships.
What type of projects do you like working on?
I’m fortunate to work on a diverse range of projects across Australia, from hospitals and data centres to commercial buildings and public spaces. Each project brings its own challenges and opportunities, which keeps my work exciting and rewarding. One of my favourite projects has been an arts and culture building in Perth, Western Australia. Being involved from the very beginning has given me a deeper appreciation for the design process, and I’m excited to see how our work will enhance Perth’s cultural scene. Knowing that this space will bring people together and create new arts experiences makes it especially meaningful.
How are you enjoying the graduate experience?
Moving from New Zealand to Sydney for this role has been an incredible experience – both professionally and personally. My team and graduate cohort are social and supportive, and I’ve made great friends over the past year. Being part of a global firm means I’ve met people from all over, including those on long-term assignments in Australia. It’s exciting to know that my career could take me anywhere in the world!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
When I’m not at work, I love escaping the city and spending time in nature. On weekends, you’ll often find me hiking with friends in national parks, exploring new trails, and taking in the fresh air. Being outdoors is a great way to reset and recharge. I’m also passionate about yoga and meditation – they help me find balance and stay mindful amidst a busy schedule. Whether it’s a morning yoga session to start the day or a quiet moment of meditation in the evening, these practices keep me grounded and refreshed.
What would you say to others considering a graduate career in engineering?
Choose a company that aligns with your values and what you need to thrive. For me, that meant finding a collaborative and friendly environment where I feel supported to learn and build connections. Be open to new experiences – working with different people broadens your perspective and leads to creative, impactful solutions. The more you embrace learning and collaboration, the more rewarding your career will be.
