6.45 AM
I wake up, feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day! My commute as an auditor is often an adventure, especially with new clients, as I work at various client offices and the BTSR office throughout the year. I usually allow around 45 minutes to get to work using public transport, giving me some time to enjoy the journey, without worrying about arriving late.
8.30 AM
I arrive at the office, set up my laptop and second portable monitor, and get ready for a productive day. Once everything is in place, I dive into my tasks for the client. This morning, I'm selecting samples for the revenue section. It's the first step in our audit process, and it’s crucial to request supporting documentation from the client early on.
While this work can be a bit repetitive, it’s a fantastic way to understand the client’s revenue streams. I get to analyse how their revenue can be tested to ensure our samples reflect the full revenue population and exclude any non-revenue items.
10.00 AM
Today is our first day on-site for this audit, so we kick things off with a quick catch-up meeting with the client. We discuss the audit timeline and review the supporting documentation we’ll need. This meeting is a great opportunity to communicate our requirements, help the client understand why we need certain documents, and get to know the client’s staff. I love meeting new people and learning about their roles and responsibilities within their business.
1.00 PM
Lunchtime! I take a well-deserved break for an hour. I spend half the time enjoying a meal and chatting with my colleagues, and the other half going for a walk. It’s wonderful to get some fresh air and stretch my legs.
2.00 PM
After lunch, I’m back at it. With the samples prepared, I start working on revenue testing by extracting supporting documentation from the client’s system. This afternoon I am working on revenue cut-off testing, which I particularly enjoy because it requires a careful application of IFRS 15 and a deep understanding of when the client recognises revenue.
5.00 PM
As the day winds down, our team has a quick catch-up to ensure everyone’s work is progressing smoothly. This is a great chance to make sure no one has missed any critical tasks and helps our managers understand our progress so they can support us effectively.
After the meeting, I review the client request list to ensure all received documentation is marked as such. This daily practice keeps both me and the client aware of pending documents and any delays.
5.30 PM
Since I’m starting a final audit and there’s a lot to be done, I aim to accomplish as much as possible on the first day. This might mean staying a bit later than usual, but I know from experience that it will make the audit process much smoother and reduce tight deadlines in the future. After a productive day, I head home feeling tired but incredibly satisfied with my work.
