Advanced Commodities Specialist at Bloomberg L.P.
Bachelor of Business (Major in Finance, Sub major in Management Consulting) at University of Technology Sydney
What's your job about?
I work as an Advanced Commodities Specialist on the Analytics team, focusing on helping clients navigate the complexities of commodity markets—whether that's oil, gas, metals, agriculture, or even carbon. My role revolves around problem-solving and communication: I support clients such as traders, analysts, and risk managers in making the most of Bloomberg’s tools. On a typical day, I might answer technical questions on our Help Desk, join a client call to walk through a workflow, or collaborate with internal teams to enhance the user experience.
Recently, I completed a Sales secondment with our Sell-Side Team, which gave me valuable exposure to a broad spectrum of clients—from regional heads to recent graduates. This experience deepened my understanding of how different users interact with Bloomberg and highlighted the importance of tailoring our support to their specific workflows. It also reinforced the need to stay sharp regarding market trends and our ever-evolving suite of tools, allowing me to have meaningful, market-related conversations and help clients unlock greater value from the Terminal. A significant part of my role involves upskilling users—whether that’s introducing a junior trader to commodity charting functions or assisting a senior analyst in efficiently integrating data into their models. By continuously learning and sharing that knowledge, I empower clients to use Bloomberg more effectively and stay ahead in their markets.
If you're curious about finance, technology, and solving complex problems, this is a fast-paced, dynamic environment where you're constantly learning and making a real impact from day one.
What's your background?
I was born in Australia but spent much of my early childhood in the United States, which gave me a global perspective from a young age. During high school, I had the opportunity to live in Italy for a year, an experience that not only strengthened my love for amazing food and culture but also taught me how to adapt quickly to new environments—something that’s proven invaluable in my career.
After returning to Australia, I completed my university studies with a focus on finance and consulting, where I discovered a passion for understanding how global markets move and connect as well as a keen desire to work in a client-facing role.
I came across Bloomberg through graduate job platforms like Prosple, and after going through the recruitment process, I joined the Analytics team in the Sydney office. I’ve now been in my role for just over a year. The fast-paced, collaborative environment really drew me in—there’s always something new to learn, and you’re encouraged to bring curiosity and initiative to the table.
Looking back, my path has been shaped by a love for learning, connecting with people, and understanding the bigger picture. That’s what made Bloomberg a natural fit for me—and what continues to make the work so rewarding.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Yes—absolutely! While a background in finance can help, it’s not a requirement. What really matters are curiosity, a willingness to learn, and strong communication skills. Our clients come from diverse industries, so being able to ask the right questions, clearly explain complex concepts, and adapt quickly is essential. People with backgrounds in science, software engineering, law, and the arts have all thrived here. If you enjoy solving problems, staying on top of market trends, and helping others succeed, this role provides you with the tools and training to grow—regardless of where you started.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
One of the coolest parts of my job is being at the intersection of real-time market events and client decision-making. I love diving into major commodity shifts—like sudden changes in oil prices or the growing influence of renewables—and helping clients make sense of what's happening. It’s especially rewarding when I can introduce someone to a tool or workflow that gives them a clearer view of the market or helps them act faster. Those moments when a client says, “I didn’t know Bloomberg could do that!” are the best proof that I’m making an impact.
What are the limitations of your job?
One of the biggest challenges in this role is the mental intensity—it’s a fast-paced environment where you're constantly context-switching between markets, products, and client needs. You need to stay sharp, adaptable, and ready to handle unexpected questions or complex problems on the spot. While the hours are generally reasonable, the learning curve is steep, and there’s a responsibility to stay up to date with both market trends and Bloomberg’s evolving tools. It can feel demanding at times, especially when juggling multiple priorities, but if you enjoy being kept on your toes, it can also be incredibly rewarding.
