The office can be quiet over the summer clerkship so I was working on a lot of non-billable tasks at times. The work was generally very interesting and some partners went to a lot of effort to involve me which was excellent.

The work given was never too overwhelming or beyond my capabilities. The work primarily focused around legal research, doc review, meeting with clients (with other lawyers present) and drafting.

As a law clerk, I have been given a wide-array of tasks from due diligence to drafting legal advice to summarising important documents. I greatly enjoy the variety of work that I am given and no two days are the exact same.

Pros and cons of working at Clayton Utz

Pros

  • A combination of the opportunity to work on top-tier matters as well as doing that work alongside some of the best in the field in the country, while also being tremendously approachable

  • Great work and great people! There is also really good support and helpful learning programs for clerks and other juniors at the firm.

  • What I like most about Clayton Utz is the work environment and attitude of everyone. It feels like we are all one big team no matter what role or seniority you are, whether you are a lawyer, catering staff or HR. The people are what makes Clayton Utz so great and their commitment to inclusion, diversity and sustainability is a positive example to other businesses.

  • Exciting work, excellent people, career development opportunities are very strong .

  • The ambience, the culture, the work, the hours, and the pay are all far above other competitors in my opinion.

Cons

    • High expectations (perfection is not expected, but your best work is)

    • Your experience can vary greatly from team to team. Sometimes senior employees and partners are very open and generous with their time, and other times, they are more reserved.

    • The hours can get long the more senior you get, and it can be a stressful environment but if you learn to manage your own schedule and attitude, and utilise the wellness resources, you'll be OK.

    • It's a more rigorous assessment process than other firms.

    • Potential for long hours .
