Master of International Relations & Master of Journalism (Counter-Terrorism & Political Violence) at Monash University
Home Affairs is such an interesting and dynamic department. I was attracted to the national security and multicultural and international work of the department because of my academic background in these areas.
The GDP was fantastic in providing multiple opportunities for networking across the department, as well as with other agencies. My grad cohort travelled to Canberra many times for grad-specific events, and they were a real highlight. We were able to meet SES, give presentations to the Secretary, and get to know each other and share our experiences of the grad year. The program connected me to so many people in my office, and I quickly felt more at home as I settled into my first year with Home Affairs. I’m still in contact with people I met from my various rotations, and it’s so lovely to see familiar faces all through the office.
I highly recommend applying! Be prepared with examples of your prior experience, especially how you manage yourself in challenging times and how you tackle projects to achieve great outcomes.
I’m still seeing the benefits of the graduate program in my current role. I learnt so much during the program about where to find information, how to use daily systems, effective communication in the department, and working with diverse personalities. I also had so many opportunities for training during the GDP. All of the combined experiences taught me how to handle myself moving forward in the department.
Being a graduate will change and challenge you, and you will make so many new connections, which will set you up for a successful career in the department and beyond.
