Senior Managing Director, Head of Healthcare & Human Services Consulting (Sydney) at FTI Consulting
1. What is your background?
In very simple terms, I was born and raised in Sydney with a strong affinity for the coast and being near the water. I studied Psychology at UNSW and later an MBA at UNSW Business School. Met an amazing human being in my wife and have been blessed to grow a lovely family with two active kids. I have dedicated my career to making our health system better.
2. What is your role about?
I help healthcare organisations such as public and private hospitals, government health departments, aged care providers and not-for-profits to improve their operations, processes, and strategies. My goal as a consultant is to help clients navigate challenges, enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and ultimately provide better care to patients while maintaining financial sustainability. The types of projects we work across involve:
3. Can you give an example of a type of engagement you were recently working on?
We supported a local health district with their virtual care strategy and rollout. There has been a big investment in virtual healthcare in recent years and in particular during COVID-19. We supported the district to explore the various virtual healthcare models available, including global best practice, and designed and delivered workshops with clinicians and staff to gather feedback on the most appropriate options. Following this ,we designed a new model of virtual healthcare that could be rolled out across the district, developed the supporting business case to apply for investment funding, and designed the implementation and change management plan to execute the new model. A very rewarding project that will deliver enhanced patient satisfaction from more flexible, timely, and accessible care.
4. Did you always know you wanted to work in this field?
Doing something tied to the health sector was always the pull, I just didn’t really know what that would look like until I found consulting as a profession. I studied Psychology as I was really interested in human behaviour, and that led me to Health consulting!
5. What is most rewarding about your job?
We work at the forefront of exciting and innovative projects, driving tangible and sustainable change that makes a real difference to healthcare and the communities we live in. We have a diverse team at FTI Consulting that brings together people from many different professional and personal backgrounds, all united by our passion for working in health and human services. Together, that makes coming to work each day purposeful and enjoyable.
6. What was a challenge?
Focus – for example, where to focus the team’s energy and capabilities; where to focus my time given it needs to be spread between building the practice, developing new business, delivering the work, helping our people; and the focus I have between work, family life and staying healthy and fit.
7. One piece of advice that you would give women/female students who want to work in professional services?
One piece of advice would be to network strategically and build relationships from early in your career. In consulting, success often depends on the relationships you cultivate - not just with clients but also with colleagues and peers. Take the time to connect with people at all levels of the organisation and seek out mentors who can offer advice and help you navigate your career. Networking isn’t just about making connections for your immediate benefit but also about fostering long-term relationships that can lead to new opportunities and collaborations down the road.
