Senior Consultant, Cybersecurity (Forensic & Litigation Consulting) at FTI Consulting
Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems at University of New South Wales (UNSW)
7.00 AM
My first of three alarms goes off, and I know I should get out of bed. I get myself ready, eat my breakfast and head out to work. On the way to work, I check my calendar to make sure I know what I have on for the day and spend some time reading cybersecurity and general news. I’m also studying for a cyber certification, so thanks to the long-ish train ride, I get to read a good chunk of my textbook.
8.45 AM
My wider team (Forensic & Litigation Consulting) goes out for coffee every Monday morning, and we spend some time catching up on each other’s weekends and chatting about our projects. The work our cybersecurity team does is quite different from the other teams (e.g. disputes, valuation, risk and investigation), so it’s really cool to hear about their projects! The coffee and chats are great motivators for returning to the office after the weekend - they’ve become my favourite part of Mondays!
9.30 AM
Back in the office, I check my emails and set a to-do list for the day. I find it helpful to track my tasks, and it’s so satisfying to tick things off the list!!
10.00 AM
We have our weekly cybersecurity team meeting, where we provide updates on all our engagements, proposals, and internal initiatives, and discuss what we will be working on this week. Today, we had a longer meeting because we were discussing an internal tool one of our grads built during her internship. It was great to see her project come to fruition!
10.45 AM
Finally, back at my desk and I will be here for a while! I look through my to-do list and start from the top. I’m currently on a few engagements, so I’ll have a good variety of work to do and I'm hopeful I can tick most things off my to-do list today!
The first one on the list is document review. One of my current engagements is acting on the plaintiff’s side in a post-data breach class action, so I printed out the relevant documents and got into my reading.
1.00 PM
Time for lunch! We’re super fortunate to have an amazing view from the kitchen – I don’t think I can ever get sick of it! As if that’s not enough, we also have a huge TV in the kitchen. Today, the whole lunch room got quite into it because the NBA All-Star Game was on!
2.00 PM
After lunch, I move to the next thing on my to-do list. Last year, we created a cyber risk management program for one of our clients who needed support with their critical infrastructure assets. We’re continuing with the next phase of the project by helping them strategise the best way to implement their remediation actions. I began by creating a project plan which includes risk responses for our client and their vendors.
3.30 PM
Feeling a little peckish, I walk to our kitchen, where there’s a range of sweet and savoury snacks. I grab a bag of pretzels and a bottle of orange juice, and hope this will keep me energised for the rest of the workday!
3.35 PM
Another engagement I’ve been working on is assisting a client onboard a cyber awareness and training platform. So, I spend some time on the phone with the vendor and our client separately to set up an introductory call for Wednesday and make sure we have all the agreements ready.
4.30 PM
Our grads just started with us this week, so we’ll be running a cyber-specific onboarding session with them. I spend the rest of my day putting together the deck that will be used for the session.
5.30 PM
I check my emails one last time and make sure I’m familiar with my schedule for the next day. I jot down a few things I should add to my to-do list for tomorrow.
6.30 PM
After I finish my dinner, I spend the next 3.5 hours chasing a plastic disc (I play ultimate frisbee). It’s a way I force myself to go outside and savour the final few cool summer nights!
11.00 PM
I get home and ready for bed. Before I sleep, I try to limit screen time, so I read a few pages of my textbook, then drift off to sleep.
