What's the best thing about your job?
I love the balance between being challenged with real responsibility and receiving guidance from experienced project managers. This approach allows me to learn quickly while taking ownership of my work. I particularly enjoy brainstorming sessions, as they provide valuable insights into the diverse range of projects we handle. These discussions also give me the opportunity to learn from senior team members, gaining firsthand knowledge from their expertise and experience.
What has been challenging?
One of the biggest challenges is managing time effectively while juggling multiple tasks. Client deadlines can shift unexpectedly, requiring adaptability and the ability to reprioritise. Some tasks may take longer than anticipated, so it’s crucial to stay calm and not feel overwhelmed. The key is clear communication—keeping the team informed and seeking support when needed. Fortunately, my team is incredibly understanding and collaborative, so while the workload can be demanding at times, you’re never facing it alone.
What is the culture like at FTI?
Our culture is driven by a commitment to excellence and a strong sense of teamwork. The team is highly knowledgeable and technically skilled yet always willing to offer guidance and support. This collaborative environment has been invaluable to my learning and growth. Beyond work, we have regular team events that create opportunities to connect on a more personal level, fostering a supportive and engaging workplace.
What advice would you give current students interested in working for FTI Consulting?
My advice would be to be yourself. When I first started, stepping into a professional, full-time work environment felt daunting and unfamiliar. I found myself staying in my comfort zone and hesitating to engage fully. However, I quickly realised that the people here are incredibly friendly and supportive. Don't hold back—embrace new experiences and be open to learning from others. The more you open up, the more you’ll grow, both professionally and personally.
How has the Graduate Development Program supported you to own your career?
The Graduate Development Program has been instrumental in helping me take ownership of my career by providing structured learning opportunities and regular feedback. I was paired with an orientation advisor (buddy) when I started, who has been a valuable source of advice, as they are in a similar stage of their career—having 2-3 years of experience—making it easy to relate. Additionally, I have regular catch-ups with my coach, who provides further guidance and support. For each engagement, there’s a system in place to receive feedback from project managers, helping me continually grow and refine my skills.
What would you have liked to know prior to starting at FTI?
Prior to starting, I wish I had known the importance of staying organised and the value of effective note-taking. While I did have group work in university, I was mainly responsible for my own tasks, and the scale of coordination was much smaller compared to a full-time role in a company. At work, my tasks have a direct impact on the entire team, so staying organised is crucial for managing multiple responsibilities and ensuring efficiency. By keeping track of key details and managing my time well, I can contribute to the team’s success and help meet deadlines more smoothly.
What is the recruitment process like?
My recruitment process was slightly different as I started as an intern. It began with an initial application and assessment of qualifications, followed by an interview with HR. Then, I had interviews with a managing director and a senior director. During my internship, I was involved in various engagements and given a case study to help me understand the type of work my team does. At the end of the internship, I was given the opportunity to present my learnings, which allowed me to reflect on my experiences and showcase the value I added to the team.
