A bit about myself. I was born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa and moved to New Zealand in 2019. I love to play football and the piano and study a bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering in my spare time because, why not.

During the summer period from mid-November 2024 to mid-February 2025, I undertook this 12-week internship as a Rolling Stock Asset Services Intern here at KiwiRail. My role involved servicing and maintenance tasks across both the Wagon and Locomotive Depots, ensuring the reliability and operational efficiency of rail assets.

At the Wagon Depot, I serviced IH, IK, and IAB wagons in teams, performed VLV inspections, wheel set changes, air brake tests, and critical bogie checks. Additionally, I received hands-on training in welding and gas cutting, skills that proved to be very handy in the workshop. Active participation in HSAT meetings further developed my understanding of workplace safety and risk management.

At the Locomotive Depot, I was engaged in traction motor inspections, brush replacements, profiling, and cleaning. I performed axial bearing maintenance, fuel injector replacements, and air filter servicing, while also assisting with rust repairs. These tasks provided an in-depth understanding of locomotive systems and their maintenance procedures.

Reflecting on this experience, I developed a strong appreciation for the critical role of rolling stock maintenance in railway operations and the significance of effective teamwork in high-risk environments. The practical skills, industry knowledge, and professional growth gained throughout this internship will be instrumental in shaping my future career as a mechanical engineer.
