Krystle

Social Worker at Services Australia

Bachelor of Social Work at Edith Cowan University (ECU)

After the meeting I’m ready to dive back into making phone calls and supporting customers, understanding that my team are really superheroes, just without capes and I strive to be that too.

6.30 AM

I wake up to the sound of my alarm and immediately bust out my phone for the morning doom scroll, checking in on a video game and playing with the dog, which is the first self-care of the morning. Then after the morning routine, I put on my uniform and head out for breakfast.

7.50 AM

I pull into the drive-thru at Maccas. I swear they have my name memorised by now. I nod at the server as I wish them a wonderful day. As I pull away with my lifeline, I take that first sip… heaven.

8.00 AM

Being the early bird I am, there’s always time for a drive past the beach. It’s like a mini-vacation every morning with the pristine water views and only the best K-pop songs blasting. It feels like I can handle anything the day brings when I start my day near the ocean.

8.30 AM

I set myself up at my desk for the day and open my inbox ready to tackle whatever I find. I check my appointments, fill in my calendar and read all important agency communications – and pat myself on the back for being so organised.

9.00 AM

I take a deep breath as I find all the information needed to help my first customer; pondering if detective work is my next calling. I look through every possible support website and phone services like the human equivalent of a Swiss army knife. Armed with the famous social work magic wand, I make the first of many appointments scheduled for me.

10.00 AM

Another meeting is about to start and I’m greeted by the faces of my lovely team members. Everyone says hello, but I just give a quick, awkward wave – I’m sure they know I’m the shy graduate.

The meeting kicks off with wellbeing exercises. On this occasion, we try to copy a YouTube video of chair yoga, but I sadly couldn’t channel a yoga master. Regardless, it was a refreshing change from just sitting.

The rest of the meeting goes by, and I get to spend some time with my colleagues.

After the meeting I’m ready to dive back into making phone calls and supporting customers, understanding that my team are really superheroes, just without capes and I strive to be that too.

11.00 AM

Amongst all the appointments, potential walk-in customers and meetings comes one of the important training foundation classes of being a graduate, aka the next leaders. ‘What makes a great leader?, we’ll certainly find out today. After hours of group activities, reflections and thinking we finish the classes with skills to practice and ambitions to make a difference.

After the class, I head off for my tea break and ponder if I should grab an ice coffee or try something new but why change the routine. After a quick break, it’s back to work.

12.00 PM

It’s a lovely day, so my supervisor and I decide to meet at a café for our catch-up. We sit and talk about life, work and what K-dramas are worth a watch. I mention my goals, my gripes and opportunities as a graduate.

I’m grateful to have someone like my supervisor, who’s invested in me and my journey in the agency.

1.30 PM

After a busy afternoon of report writing, speaking with customers and attending any meetings, I realise it’s pushing 2 pm – time for my famously late lunch. I heat up my ready meal and scroll on my phone peacefully. Some days, I mix it up by scrolling on my phone outside when the weather is great, whatever helps to relax after a busy day.

2.00 PM

On occasion, I’ll get the opportunity to travel to see another agency, which is a good networking adventure. I promote my social work services and leave my contact details to create good connections. I leave knowing I’ve shared more services to refer my customers to.

3.00 PM

I return to the office and immediately dive into report writing, documenting my day, catching up on emails, keying in my appointments and meetings and then take a brief walk outside for afternoon tea as some self-care.

4.30 PM

As the clock ticks to 4.30 pm, I start getting ready to head home for dinner and relaxing. I spend my evening the same way my morning began, doom scrolling to unwind, gaming and playing with my dog so I can save the world tomorrow.
