Your role

Duties and responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the public information intern may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Participates in media monitoring: researches and evaluates global news coverage and related social media conversations about the conflict in Ukraine. Develops subject matter expertise in the topic.
  • Utilizes specialized online tools such as Talkwalker to monitor traditional and social media.
  • Researches, compiles, and drafts information for use in the preparation and production of reports and social media content.
  • Takes on other projects as assigned.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme but are encouraged to list all relevant experience in their personal history profile (PHP).

Work location:

  • The position is located in the Evaluation and Communications Research Unit, Office of the Under-Secretary-General, Department of Global Communications.
  • The Unit provides regular insights reporting on key priorities for Departmental learning, identifying possible areas for adjustment to the Department’s programmes and activities.
  • The Unit analyzes data on communications outcomes across various platforms, including online news, social media, multimedia, and flagship websites.
  • The intern reports to the Programme Officer.
  • The Department of Global Communications internship is for two months with an opportunity for an extension to no longer than six months in total duration, depending on the needs of the Department.
  • The internship is UNPAID.
  • The intern may work remotely but should be available during the New York (Eastern Time) working hours of 9 am to 5 pm.
  • The intern may work on a full or part-time basis as long as they meet the performance needs for this role.

The expected duration is 2-6 months starting in August or September.

About you

Qualifications/Special Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) OR
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Your training, education, advanced coursework, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Knowledge of social media metrics is desirable.
  • Knowledge of media monitoring and analysis is desirable.
  • Experience using functions and performing data visualization using Excel and PowerBI is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
