Your role

Duties and responsibilities:

The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is responsible for coordinating humanitarian actors to ensure a cohesive response during emergencies, advocating for the rights of those in need, and promoting preparedness and sustainable solutions. OCHA's Evaluation and Oversight Section (EOS) in New York manages evaluations of OCHA's humanitarian efforts and monitors the implementation of recommendations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Researching, analyzing, and presenting information on assigned topics from diverse sources.
  • Supporting the planning and organization of meetings and briefings.
  • Drafting meeting notes, background papers, and other documents, and conducting thematic research as needed.
  • Designing various informational materials such as publication covers, presentation templates, and social media visuals.
  • Proposing solutions for better management of the Section’s information and knowledge products.
  • Identifying opportunities to enhance the visibility of OCHA's evaluation products.
  • Assisting in collecting stakeholder feedback and reviewing project documents.
  • Contributing to the preparation of written documents including sections of evaluations and background papers.
  • Maintaining and updating documents on the team website.
  • Collaborating with programme/project managers on performance monitoring.
  • Researching and monitoring UN developments and news sources for relevant updates.
  • Assisting in the preparation of dissemination plans for ongoing evaluations and related documents, including presentations and promotional materials.
  • Supporting the Section’s activities related to evaluation and oversight.
  • Performing other duties as required.

About you

Qualifications/Special Skills:

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Students who have completed the academic year before the final year of a first university degree but have not yet commenced the final year are also eligible, provided they can show proof of continued enrolment.

The university degree must be in the area of political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences, or a related field. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advanced coursework, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.

Intern Specific text:

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
