Your role

About the internship:

The duration of the internship is four (4) months with a possibility of extension to six (6) months. This internship is unpaid in person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premises working arrangement from New York. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. 

Duties and responsibilities:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background as well as on the activities of the Programme Office during which he/she will undertake the internship. The intern is expected to perform various activities and will work in areas of program management and policy matters related to counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism, including:

  • Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, etc.
  • Attend and prepare summaries of conferences and meetings.
  • Support the organization of meetings conferences, and side events to strengthen strategic engagement with the UNOCT partners.
  • Assist in data collection, conduct research, and analysis on relevant topics.
  • Assist in maintaining databases.
  • Assist with the translation of program-related documents and correspondence.
  • Support the preparation and review of key publications.
  • Assist in preparing training and learning events and other capacity-building initiatives.
  • Supporting program management and policy matters related to counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism.

Salary & benefits 

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

About you

Qualifications/special skills:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements;

  • (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Program or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Masters, or PH.D. Program.
  • Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.
  • Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and working knowledge of Spanish is desirable. Knowledge of another language is an advantage.
