The EY (Ernst & Young) Story

Ernst & Young was born in 1989 when Ernst & Whitney agreed to a merger deal with Arthur Young & Co., the fifth-largest company in the world then.

In late 1997, EY announced that it intended to merge its operations with KPMG professional practices to create the biggest network of professional services globally. This decision came shortly after Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand had a similar merger announcement.

The following year, such plans were dropped because of cost problems, issues stemming from client opposition, antitrust issues, and the expected difficulty of unifying two very different organizations and company cultures. Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand proceeded with their merger to become PwC.

In the two decades that spanned from the early 80s to the late 90s, EY heavily grew and expanded its consulting services and reach. In May 2022, the Wall Street Journal reported that EY might divide its advisory and accounting arms to form separate organizations.
