Shortly after this, Hughes attempted to end the merger agreement, which triggered Baker to sue them for a billion dollars. A couple of years after its establishment, Baker Hughes made three major acquisitions - Bird Machine Company, EDECO Petroleum Services, and Vetsco Services. The following year, it acquired Eastman Christensen, gaining a strong foothold in diamond bit technology and directional drilling operations.

In 1997, the firm strengthened its drilling operations by acquiring Drilex, a renowned firm known for providing drilling products and services.
