Financial Assurance Associate at PwC NZ
Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Commercial Law) at University of Auckland
What's your job about?
My role as an associate involves tasks like ensuring controls operate effectively, vouching accounting transactions, and analyzing financial information using tools like Aura, which is a PwC audit platform designed to streamline our audit processes.
Initially, I thought auditing solely focused on accounting. However, it encompasses much more, such as understanding client business models and operational processes, which has deepened my interest in the field.
Working closely with clients has not only provided valuable insights into large and complex businesses but has also honed my communication and analytical skills. Within the first year of my career, I have worked with clients in various industries, such as banking, insurance, asset management, and property. It’s been amazing to gain such broad exposure early in my career, setting a strong foundation for my future growth in auditing and beyond.
What's your background?
I grew up in Levin, a town about an hour north of Wellington. Compared to Auckland, it was a small place. As someone who had spent their entire childhood in Levin, the idea of living in a city and working in a skyscraper always seemed like a dream!
After high school, I moved up to Auckland for university. I got amongst clubs and networking events, and it was there that I first got introduced to the Big 4. I remember one of my very first events being at the PwC tower where I was absolutely blown away by the facilities and the breathtaking views. I remember thinking, “It would be so cool to work here one day”.
At the start of my penultimate year, I applied for internships and was fortunate enough to have incredible mentors who had previously interned at the Big 4. They provided in-depth insights into the vast exposure and opportunities available in Audit, which fuelled my motivation to apply for an internship.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Absolutely! While I come from an accounting background, there are people in Audit who have finance or even law backgrounds. Having a basic understanding of accounting is helpful but not essential. Honestly, as someone with an accounting background, I’ve learned 90% of my job after joining PwC.
Accounting is just one of the many skills that you have as an auditor. I believe the most important thing is to have a good attitude and a willingness to learn. In Audit, we often say that technical skills can be taught, but you can’t teach someone to have a good attitude.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
One of my favorite parts of the day is my morning routine at work. I often grab a coffee from our in-house barista, along with some yogurt and fruit, and take that time to catch up with colleagues.
I also appreciate how effortlessly I can get along with my colleagues, as most of the people I work with are close in age. This is also what helps me get through the busy season. While the work can be tough and the stress levels are high, having a good team makes all the difference!
